Introduction to Anarchisms
Punch Up Collective
In this workshop we offer an introduction to anarchist movements, histories, and ideas. Especially if you’re new to thinking about these politics, we want you to leave understanding how anarchism is different from other political traditions, and also that there are different kinds of anarchism (as well as differences between abolitionism, Indigenous practices of collective care and self-governance, and anarchisms coming out of European and global contexts). This will be a low-pressure, open space for questions, learning, and discussion.
11-12pm
Clean Air in a Fucked-Up World
COVID Action Montreal (CAM)
Explaining the importance of clean air. Guiding attendees in building their own air purifier (Corsi-Rosenthal box). Teaching the group the math for how much filtration is needed for a room depending on the situation. Providing free related zines for those interested. Runs for 1-2 hours with time for questions and discussion.
12pm-1pm
Investigating the Military Industrial Complex
Science for the People
The military-industrial complex is opaque in many ways but much of what it does is hiding in plain sight. We will share investigative techniques you can use to uncover data to educate the public and support activists. We will also share some of our findings about weapons manufacturing here in Ottawa.
After attending this workshop, you will be able to join us in using research to counter the war machine.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops.
1-2pm
Justice & Peace Without Prisons & Police: Transformative Justice Practices in Anarchist Spaces
Ottawa Transformative Justice Collective & Lukayo
Self-accountability skills, support pods, and peace circles– these are a few of the practices we can learn together when we want to keep each other safe using transformative justice principles in our activist and anarchist spaces. Using voluntary exercises based on Theatre of the Oppressed techniques, we’ll first explore the differences between a punitive and carceral system, and what it means to be part of supporting consequences and community accountability. We’ll introduce various TJ practices, and then move into breakout groups to apply what we’ve learned in various case studies. Some of these case studies will be discussing violence institutionally and interpersonally, on many levels.
2-3pm
Social Media for the people (not corporations)
Angela Collective
Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, and god forbid “X”, have become requirements for living a modern life. These platforms actively stifle competition and funnel every ounce of your data into the hands of data brokers and money in their pockets. This doesn’t have to be how we connect digitally however. Join us at this workshop to discuss alternative anarchistic social media platforms such as the Fediverse (NO NOT the METAverse) but a federated universe of social media servers. Hopefully by the end of the event you will have an account, and a room full of friends!
